THE IMPORTANCE OF A DINING ROOM

Dining Room

The dining room is a special space. It symbolises a place for gathering and connecting with loved ones. Many memories are formed in this room. Yet today we see more and more of a disconnect with this space, as lives become busier and family mealtimes accompany tv and screen time.

Research suggests that utilising the dining room for mealtimes increases quality time spent with family and encourages conversations and interactions. Not to mention, sit-down family mealtimes help us process our day and develop healthy eating habits.

So how can we make our dining room a space we use every day not just for special occasions?

The first thing to consider is comfort. Having comfortable dining chairs can make a big difference to the amount of time you spend in your dining room. It encourages you to stay seated for a conversation after a meal.  You can also make your dining room more comfortable by adding soft textures and surfaces. This could be by adding a rug under your dining table or even cushions on your chairs. However, make sure the rug is cleanable. Having furnishings that are durable for everyday use creates a sense of informality, allowing you to feel more comfortable utilising your dining area.

Try adding a rustic table and durable textiles. You want to feel comfortable eating in the dining room without having to worry about wear and tear.

Lastly, it’s good to create a good mood to the space! Add soft warm lighting and maybe some candles to create a cosy feel. All of these additions to your room will help encourage you to spend more family time in this space.
